Hello from Dan Hoogterp – AK4GX (now W4LI)

Welcome to AK4GX.com.

I’m Dan Hoogterp, a recently licensed amateur extra.  Upon receiving my call sign, I promptly acquired the domain that matched my call sign and set up this site.

Then, as days went by, I decided I wanted a phonetically and lexically shorter call sign.  I chose the ‘vanity call sign’ route to get a shiny new call sign: WG3O.

After receiving the easy to say, shiny call sign, WG30, I found something interesting.  About a third of the longer QSOs on the air involved, “what’s the story with the 3 callsign, given that you are recently on the air, and don’t live in area 3?”

I decided to take a shot at a coveted ‘4’ callsign, and a 1×2 at that.  Well, it worked, I’m now W4LI.  I was shocked that I snagged this, as at least a half dozen people were queued for ‘competition.’  Well, that is it.  I’m now W4LI and don’t plan to change it anytime soon.  A 4, a 1×2, a W prefix, which I prefer, and I now have an established address in the amateur world.  I can also order my QSL cards now.
